Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the reduction of astigmatism and visual outcomes after toric intraocular lens (IOL) Bi-Flex (Medicontur) during cataract surgery in patients with cataract and pre-existing corneal astigmatism.

Setting:

Hospital Marina Salud Denia, 03700 Denia, Spain

Methods:

The toric IOL Bi-Flex (Medicontur) was implanted with the technique of phacoemulsification in patients with corneal pre-existing astigmatism >2.5D. The preoperative parameters measured were the visual acuity (AV) and the corneal astigmatism with the corneal topography (TOPCON KR-8100-P). Two weeks postoperatively, the rotational stability (position of the cylindrical axis) of the IOL was evaluated and one month postoperatively, the uncorrected and corrected visual acuities and residual refractive astigmatism were evaluated. The vectorial formalism method was used to analyze the surgically and induced astigmatism.

Results:

Twenty-two eyes of 25 patientes were enrolled (medium of age 73.13±9.31 years). Preoperatively, the mean astigmatism was -4.16±1.85 D measured with the topography. Postoperatively, the mean rotation between the planned axes for the implantation was 4.72 ± 11.23º, the mean uncorrected visual acuity was 0.34±0.29 logMAR and the corrected visual acuity was 0.06±0.08 logMAR. The mean residual refractive astigmatism was -1.35±0.86 D. Spectacle independence for distance vision was achieved in 85% of patients.

Conclusions:

The implantation of the toric IOL Bi-Flex (Medicontur) is a safe procedure, effective and precise for the correction of the moderate and high astigmatism in subjects submitted to the operation of cataract.
