Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the refractive outcome and postoperative lens position of eyes with two different toric IOLs.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Hietzing Hospital, Vienna, Austria
Methods:
In this prospective, randomized study 50 subjects with corneal astigmatism greater then 1.5 diopter (D) were implanted with an AT Torbi 709M IOL (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG) in one eye and with a Tecnis toric aspheric IOL (Abbot Medical Optics) in the other eye. Subjects underwent standard cataract surgery with IOL implantation. Postoperative assessment was done at 12 months and included uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) on ETDRS chart, manifest refraction, slit lamp examination, corneal topography and Visante OCT measurement of IOL position.
Results:
Mean UCDVA was 0.04 ± 0.14 logMAR for AT Torbi eyes and 0.06 ± 0.15 logMAR for Tecnis eyes (p = 0.5). Mean BCDVA was -0.045 ± 0.1 logMAR for AT Torbi eyes and -0.02± 0.13 logMAR for Tecnis eyes (p = 0.3). The mean postoperative residual refractive astigmatism was 0.5D ± 0.4 in the AT Torbi eyes and 0.6D ± 0.39 in the Tecnis eyes (p = 0.9). Mean toric IOL axis rotation was 1.54°± 2.5° for AT Torbi eyes and 2.21°±2.6° for Tecnis eyes (p = 0.2). No statistically significant differences were found in IOL tilt or decentration between groups.
Conclusions:
The Tecnis and Zeiss AT Torbi toric IOLs successfully reduce ocular astigmatism and are a safe and effective treatment for cataract patients with corneal astigmatism.
