Abstract Details

Purpose:

Clinical evaluation of outcomes of toric hydrophobic intraocular lenses implantations in to the eyes with astigmatism and amblyopia, considered from the young age.

Setting:

ˡMedilux Eye Centrum, Galanta, Slovak Republic

Methods:

Cataract surgery was done by incision 2,75 mm, capsulorhexis 5,5 mm, implantation by injector to the capsular bag. The toric intraocular lenses Acrysof Toric SN60T3-T9 ( Alcon, Inc.) were implanted. Spherical equivalent of implanted IOLs was +22.4D, (range +6.0D to +30.0 D). The retrospective evaluation of the astigmatism and visual acuity one week after surgery was done. Statistical analysis was done by Student t-test – comparing of the mean values.

Results:

17 patients (25 eyes ) underwent uneventful cataract surgery at period 04/2010 – 02/2015. 8 eyes was considered amblyopic from the young age of great astigmatism or anisometropia. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) before surgery was 0.3134 (SD ±0.2556,) (Snellen optotyps). The BCVA after the cataract surgery was 0.7191 (SD± 0.2527). This improving of visual acuity (VA) was significant (p≤0.05). The corneal astigmatism before and after the cataract surgery was unchanged. ( p≥0.05). The BCVA of eyes, which were regarded as amblyopic, had mean value 0.241 (SD ±0.192). The uncorrected VA after surgery was 0.618 (SD ±0.282). This improving was significant p<0.05)

Conclusions:

The implantation of toric intraocular lens is a good option for solution of astigmatism at the cataract surgery and significantly improve postoperative uncorrected visual acuity. This procedure may be a viable therapeutic modality for improving visual acuity of eyes with mild and moderate amblyopia at anisometropia.
