Clinical evaluation of a trifocal toric intraocular lens designed to reduce astigmatism and improve distance, intermediate and near vision

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the refractive outcomes and visual performance of eyes implanted with a trifocal toric intraocular lens during cataract surgery.

Setting:

Asian Eye Institute, Makati City, Philippines

Methods:

This is a prospective, non-randomized case series. Ten patients (20 eyes) were recruited to undergo femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and bilateral implantation of a trifocal toric intraocular lens (POD-FT, Physiol, Belgium). Patients had to have visually significant cataracts, corneal astigmatism of 1.0D or greater as documented by keratometry or topography and no other co-morbidities. Outcome measures include distance, intermediate and near vision (uncorrected and distance-corrected); manifest refraction and IOL rotational stability.

Results:

Eight patients with a mean age of 69 years participated and have reached 3-month follow up. At 3 months, mean spherical equivalent was +0.05±0.34D. 100% of eyes were within 1D of emmetropia. The mean refractive cylinder decreased from -1.94D±1.16D to -0.68D±0.28D. The mean monocular uncorrected visual acuities (logMAR) were 20/23 (0.06±0.07) for distance, 20/27 (0.12 ±0.12) for intermediate, and 20/29 (0.15±0.11) for near. The mean axis deviation from intended to last follow up was 2.4 degrees. No IOL rotated more than 10 degrees from the intended axis.

Conclusions:

The trifocal toric IOL provided good uncorrected distance, intermediate and near vision after cataract surgery. Results show its consistency in correcting preexisting astigmatism and decreasing refractive error. The trifocal toric lens was rotationally stable at 3 months postoperative.
