Trifocal intraocular lens implantation: visual outcomes and patient satisfaction

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual performance of the bilateral implantation of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) - the AT LISA tri 839 MP IOL.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department of Centro Hospitalar do Baixo Vouga, Portugal.

Methods:

We reviewed 11 patients who underwent bilateral implantation of the AT LISA tri 839 MP IOL. Patients with known ocular disease, history of previous ophthalmic surgery and topographic astigmatism higher than 1.0 diopters (D) were excluded. Complete ophthalmologic examination was performed, and uncorrected and corrected far, near and intermediate visual acuities were recorded pre- and postoperatively. Best distance-corrected monocular contrast sensitivity (CS) under mesopic and photopic conditions and stereopsis were also measured. Spectacle independence, photic phenomena and overall satisfaction were assessed.

Results:

This series comprised of 11 patients with a mean age of 57.89 ± 8.91 years. Mean follow up was 11.89 ± 4.51 months (6 – 18 months). Mean postoperative spherical equivalent was 0.06 D ± 0.34 and mean residual cylinder was 0.41 D ± 0.34. Uncorrected binocular distance-visual acuity was 1.11 ± 0.10 and uncorrected binocular near-visual acuity was 0.94 ± 0.09. Photopic CS was within normal age-matched limits, with a slight drop under mesopic conditions. Photic phenomena were mild, with complete independence of spectacles in 72,73% of patients. 100% of patients were very satisfied/satisfied with their distance and intermediate visual function and 90.91% refered the same regarding to the near visual performance.

Conclusions:

The diffractive trifocal intraocular lens AT LISA tri 839 MP seems to provide spectacle independence in presbyopic patients implanted binocularly, with satisfactory uncorrected range of vision from distance to near, showing no functional significant drop in intermediate vision. Overall patient satisfaction was high, with mild dysphotopsia complains and slight decrease in contrast sensitivity in mesopic conditions.
