Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the performance of an apodized diffractive bifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with an addition of +2.5 diopters (D) for near, intermediate and distance vision.
Setting:
Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega. Oviedo. Spain
Methods:
Prospective, non-randomized, clinical trial which included 62 patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery with bilateral implant of a ReSTOR +2.5 (Alcon Laboratories, EEUU) IOL. The +2.5 addition at lens plane is equivalent to +1.75 in glasses. Mean age was 74.4±9.6 years. Inclusion criteria were: age greater than 55 years, distance corrected preoperatory vision greater than or equal to 0.4 (Snellen decimal scale), spherical refraction into the dioptric range of the lens (+6.00 to +34.00 D) and astigmatism bigger than to 2.00 D. Postoperatively, refraction, near, intermediate and distance vision and the need for a Excimer enhancement were analyzed.
Results:
Six months after surgery the manifest sphere had reduced from +0.46±2.75 to +0.07±0.38 D. Manifest cylinder was reduced from -0.93±0.87 to -0.55±0.58 D. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) improved from 0.25±0.20 to 0.72±0.21 and with distance correction (DCVA) improved from 0.74±0.20 to 0.91±0.12. 30 (24.2%) eyes maintained their initial DCVA AVCC and 94 (75.8%) gained one or more li9nes of vision. Mean DCVA measured at 30, 40, 50 and 60 cm, was 0.5, 0.6, 0.9 y 0.8 respectively. Regarding use of glasses 48 patients (77.4%) required it to certain activities, such as reading. Excimer enhancement wasn’t indicated for any patient.
Conclusions:
Patients who underwent cataract surgery and implanted with a ReSTOR +2.5 IOL, reached good distance and intermediate uncorrected vision. When emmetropy was achieved patient didn’t require glasses at those distances, although most of them (77%) required addition for near vision.
