Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the results of different measurements of refraction using subjective manifest refraction (MR), automated refraction (AR) and aberrometer based refraction (ABR).

Setting:

Inje University College of Medicine and Haeundae Paik Hospital,South Korea

Methods:

This study evaluated 28 eyes (16 patients) implanted low-diopter added refractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) with a rotational asymmetric design (LS313-MF15). At 3 months follow-up, the AR, MR and ABR values were compared to determine the correlation between the sphere (S), the spherical equivalent (SE) and the astigmatic components J0 and J45.

Results:

The difference of mean spherical measurement between AR and MR was -0.02D with the AR measuring more myopic and ABR showed more hyperopic results than AR (+0.26D). The mean spherical equivalent was measured more myopic in AR (-0.09D) and more hyperopic in ABR (+0.11D) than MR. The difference between AR and MR was not statistically significant, however, MR and ABR was significantly different. The mean difference of astigmatic components (J0 and J45) compared to MR was (+0.12D and -0.04D) in AR and (+0.32D and -0.06D). Correlation analysis of the refractive parameters showed high correlation between the AR and the MR, however there was low correlation between the ABR and the MR.

Conclusions:

Automated refraction showed good correlation to MR, however aberrometer based refraction did not correlate with manifest refraction. In cases with low-diopter-added multifocal IOL implantation, AR seems to be an alternative method to subjective MR among several methods to measure refraction.
