Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare through focus image performance of a novel presbyopia correcting IOL with existing bifocal models.

Setting:

Vision Science/Optics Laboratory at Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, Texas, USA.

Methods:

Laboratory bench simulation of retinal images for pseudophakic eyes was performed with the Acrysof® IQ ReSTOR +3.0 D IOL, the Acrysof® IQ ReSTOR +2.5 D IOL, and the novel presbyopia correcting IOL. Badal optometer images of a Snellen letter chart simulating viewing distances from infinity to 40cm were generated with IOLs in model eye environment.

Results:

The novel presbyopia correcting IOL has a distance focus with better than 20/20 simulated resolution. The intermediate focus at 60 cm and the near focus at 42 cm also have good resolutions, with less contrast and some halo compared to the distance focus. The 20/40 equivalent text line is resolvable from 80 cm to 40 cm. The ReSTOR +3.0 D distance image shows better contrast than the novel presbyopia correcting IOL, with a comparable near image at 44 cm, but with less intermediate resolution. ReSTOR +2.5 D IOLs has a monofocal-like distance image, with a fainter near image at 53 cm.

Conclusions:

The novel presbyopia correcting IOL can provide distance vision, as well near vision and a substantial range of intermediate vision. ReSTOR +3.0 D provides somewhat better distance vision than the novel presbyopia correcting IOL, while maintaining similar near vision, but less intermediate performance. ReSTOR +2.5 D provides the best distance vision of the three IOL models, while providing adequate near vision for patients whose lifestyles require less near vision, or who tolerate spectacles for more demanding near tasks.
