Implantation of multifocal IOL Rayner M-flex to patient ill with retinitis pigmentosa: analysis of clinical case

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The analysis of practicability of bilateral implantation of multifocal IOL Rayner M-flex, performed in patient ill with retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

Setting:

the study was carried out in Khabarovsk affiliation of Eye Microsurgery complex named after acad. S. Fyodorov, Russia

Methods:

Patient Ch., 37 years old, ill with mid-stage RP, manager, suffers with RP since 2004. He regularly received courses of pathogenetic neurotrophic treatment. The vision acuity (VA) of patient’s both eyes has decreased dramatically in 2011 because of complicated cataract development (OD=0.2 and OS=0.3), thus he had to give up his work. The patient was advised to undergo phacoemulsification on both eyes. Taking into consideration the young age of patient, relatively preserved condition of neuroreceptory apparatus of the eye and patients’ desire to read without glasses, we have chosen the mulifocal IOL Rayner M-flex for implantation.

Results:

Patient underwent eneventful phacoemulsification on both eyes with 3 months interval. Distant VA of right eye made 0.9, of left eye - 0,8; near VA - OD=0,7 and OS=0,6 one month post operation. Vision functions remained stable during period of postop observation, significant negative changes in retina condition were not registered (according to ERG data). Patient receives courses of neurotrophical treatment regularly (twice a year). The patient is fully satisfied with the functional results of operation which allowed him to continue his work and lead the active way of life.

Conclusions:

The described clinical case testifies that implantation of multifocal IOL Rayner M-flex widens possibilities of social and medical rehabilitation of patients ill with classic forms of RP. It provides good near and distant VA, doesn’t produce negative effect on central and periphery vision field and retinal electrogenesis, and allows patient to return to his professional activity.
