Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcomes and patient satisfaction in 15 patients following bilateral implantation of the Technis Symfony multifocal intraocular lens.

Setting:

BMI Southend Hospital, UK

Methods:

Patients were assessed at 1 month and 4 months post-op. At each visit distance, intermediate and near visual acuity was assessed. Subjective refraction was measured and patients were questioned in a standardised format regarding satisfaction and dysphotopsia.

Results:

All patients reported high levels of satisfaction and minimal difficulty with halos and glare. All patients had UDVA of 0.30 LogMAR or better, and no patient wore distance glasses following surgery. At 1 month, mean monocular UDVA was 0.06LogMAR±0.10 and binocular -0.03LogMAR±0.07. Mean binocular UNVA and UIVA were 0.29LogMAR±0.16 and 0.14LogMAR±0.19. There were no statistically significant differences between 1 month and 4 month visits. 3 patients wore glasses regularly for reading.

Conclusions:

The Technis Symfony intraocular lens achieves excellent distance and intermediate vision unaided. Near vision is enhanced with spectacle correction for small print and/or reduced lighting levels. Dysphotopsia is reported but of no significant consequence. The Technis Symfony is an excellent multifocal lens with high levels of patient satisfaction. Minimal myopia in the second eye creating a mini-monovision effect could further enhance near vision.
