New hydrophobic single-piece IOLs with accurately known dioptric value improve postoperative refractive results

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate whether the use of hydrophobic single-piece intraocular lenses (IOLs) with accurately labeled dioptric power improves postoperative results owing to a better predictability.

Setting:

Augenarztpraxis EYEC - Klinik Siloah, Bern Switzerland

Methods:

Preloaded hydrophobic monofocal single-piece MTO Crystal Evolution IOLs were implanted into 350 cataract eyes. No exclusion criteria were applied in order to avoid bias. The dioptric value of each single lens is known with a 0.01D precision, facilitating the selection of the optimal lens corresponding to the biometric measurement (Haigis formula). The one-month postoperative best visual acuity (BCVA) was determined by subjective refraction. The achieved dioptric values were compared to the attempted correction. The predictability of the postoperative spherical equivalence (SE) was analyzed and compared to results obtained for 256 cataract eyes implanted with standard 0.5D increment IOLs.

Results:

Data analysis of the predictability of postoperative SE in the range of ±0.5D demonstrates that 80% of the eyes implanted with Crystal Evolution lenses are within this range. The data obtained with standard IOLs show that 74% of the eyes implanted with standard increment (±0.5D) IOLs are within the same range.

Conclusions:

The data indicate that IOLs with accurately (0.01D) measured dioptric power seem to allow for a better predictability than IOLs with rounded-off dioptric power, thereby improving postoperative outcome and patient satisfaction.
