Precizon toric IOL for astigmatism correction in cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the refractive outcomes and rotational stability of the PRECIZON Toric IOL (Ophtec) for the correction of preexisting corneal astigmatism in patients undergoing routine cataract surgery.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital de Braga, Portugal.

Methods:

Patients with cataract and corneal astigmatism above 1 diopters(D) measured by ALLEGRO Biograph (Wavelight) were included in this prospective study. Pentacam HR (Oculus) was performed in all patients pre-operatively and the cornea was marked in the sitting position with a pendulum marker. The minimun follow-up was 3 months. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), residual refractive sphere, residual keratometric and refractive cylinders, and toric IOL axis were measured before and 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. IOL misalignment and rotational stability were assessed by retroillumination photographs and by OPD-SCAN III (Nidek).

Results:

Twenty-four eyes of twelve patients were included in this study. The mean pre-operative corneal astigmatism was 2,92D and the mean post-operative refractive cylinder was 0,77D. The mean post-operative UDVA was 0,68. A post-operative spherical equivalent of ±0,5D was observed in 88% of the eyes. Mean IOL rotation was 3,6 degrees with 96% of the eyes with an IOL rotation inferior to 10 degrees. The IOL was repositioned in one eye. A positive statistical correlation was found between the size of the capsular bag and the rotation of the IOL (R=0,55; p=0,03). No complications were observed.

Conclusions:

Implantation of the PRECIZON Toric is a safe and effective method to correct corneal astigmatism in patients undergoing routine cataract surgery. The IOL showed a good rotational stability.
