A comparative study of the performance of two intraocular monofoccal lenses, Quadimax and Asphina-Zeiss used in cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the performance of Quadrimax and Zeiss Asphina- monofocal IOL’s with regards to vision after phaco lensextraction for cataracts.

Setting:

Monofocal IOLs are used to replace the natural opaque lens of the eye in order to restore vision, especially distance vision.

Methods:

As part of an ongoing study the vision of patients with Quadrimax monofocal IOL’s and Zeiss Asphina monofocal IOL implants were compared. Assessment intervals for each lens comprised, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1year post operation intervals between 2012 and 2015. Data was divided into eyes without any pathology influencing vision and then pathology influencing vision.

Results:

Patient data concerning uncorrected distance vision (UCDVA) for the various time intervals were compared between the two monofocal lenses. Data analyses exhibited various trends observed with regards to the comparison between the respective lenses

Conclusions:

Across the board, Zeiss Asphina had the largest percentage eyes with UCDVA ≥ 0.8. At the 4-8 week time interval, eyes without pathology exhibited 73% of Zeiss Asphina eyes with UCDVA ≥ 0.8 and only 67% of eyes with Quadrimax implants had UCDVA ≥ 0.8. At the one year time interval 64% of eyes with Zeiss Asphina had a UCDVA ≥ 0.8, while only 52 % of eyes with Quadrimax lenses had UCDVA ≥ 0.8.
