Abstract Details

Purpose:

Extended range of vision lenses are designed to provide counties vision across a range of focal distances. their in vivo performance can be assessed by monocular functional vision testing using the PANFOCAL method. This study presents the monocular functional vision evaluation of patients undergoing lens exchange surgery using Micromonovision refractive targeting with an Extended Range of Vision Intra-ocular lens.

Setting:

Private Practice and Research Centre

Methods:

50 consecutive eyes of undergoing lens exchange surgery using an extended range of vision intra-ocular lenses were enrolled. The refractive target ranged from emmetropia to -0.75 Dioptres. Four to 8 weeks after surgery their monocular, uncorrected and distance corrected visual acuities for distance, intermediate and near (photopic and mesopic) were measured. Monocular Objective task assessments for intermediate and near vision tasks were also carried out Monocular uncorrected acuity of 6/9 for distance, intermediate, near photopic and mesopic conditions was the primary outcome measure.

Results:

All eyes achieved a monocular uncorrected visual acuity of 6/9 or better for distance and intermediate. 45% of eyes achieved a visual acuity of 6/9 or better for near in photopic conditions. Distance corrected intermediate visual acuities were 6/9 or better in all eyes. Distance corrected median near photopic visual acuity was 6/12. Monocular task performance was excellent for intermediate tasks and variable for near vision tasks more so in mesopic conditions

Conclusions:

The functional vision performance of an extended range of vision lens is consistent with its optical design. The monocular distance and intermediate visual acuities are consistently excellent while the near vision performance is variable with a median monocular distance corrected acuity of 6/12.
