In vitro optical quality comparison among two trifocal and a progressive multifocal intraocular lenses

Purpose:
To compare the optical quality among three multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL): the Mini WELL ready progressive multifocal (SIFI Medtech, Italy), the AT Lisa trifocal (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) and the Finevision (PhysIOL, Liège, Belgium).

Methods:
An instrument conceived for measuring real-time modulation transfer function (MTF) was used to measure the optical quality of each IOL for the 3.0 mm and 4.50 mm aperture. The optical quality of each lens was evaluated in terms of MTF, through focus MTF, defocus tolerance, pupil dependence, Strehl ratio MTF, and the relative percentage of light in each foci. These metrics were evaluated at each IOL best foci.
Results:
Through focus graphs corresponding to trifocal IOLs showed three mean peaks. Nevertheless, the Mini WELL ready IOL showed two main areas: one corresponding to distance-vision focus, and the other one includes both intermediate- and near-vision foci. The AT LISA IOL was the less optical aperture dependent, whose MTF was deteriorated fewer than 0.1 units with the aperture. The optical quality of both the Mini WELL ready and Finevision improved with the aperture at its distance-vision focus. Finally, the Mini WELL ready IOL showed the highest defocus tolerance for both apertures, its highest deterioration being less than 15 %.
Conclusions:
The results obtained in the present study suggest that the Mini WELL ready lens seems to be a good therapeutic option over trifocal lenses after either cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange.
