Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate distance–near visual performance and measure subjective and objective accommodative amplitude of eyes 2 years after surgery, in which Tetraflex accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted.

Setting:

Eye Clinic, Bakirkoy Dr. Sadi Konuk Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

Tetraflex IOL implanted 16 eyes of 14 cataract patients were evaluated at 2 years after surgery. Uncorrected (UCVA) and best corrected distance visual acuities (BCVA), uncorrected (UNVA), distance-corrected near visual acuities (DCNVA), best corrected near visual acuities (BCNVA) and spherical equivalent (SE) refraction were measured respectively. Subjective defocusing and objective anterior chamber depth (ACD) assessment before and after topical application of pilocarpine using Scheimpflug topographer combined with Placido disk were the concomitant methods for measuring accommodative amplitude.

Results:

No postoperative complications were observed. Measurements at 2 years follow-up visit: UCVA, BCVA, UNVA, DCNVA and BCNVA were 0.13 ± 0.16; 0.00 ± 0.05; 0.52 ± 0.15; 0.61 ± 0.08 and 0.06 ± 0.07 logMAR respectively. The mean SE was – 0.29 ± 0.67 Diopters (D). The mean subjective accommodation was 1.13 ± 0.26 D (range from 0.75 to 1.50 D), whereas the mean pilocarpine-induced anterior chamber depth reduction (∆ ACD) was 0.35 ± 0.15 mm (range from 0.19 to 0.75 mm). 4 eyes (25 %) did have Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification by 2 years after surgery.

Conclusions:

Tetraflex accommodative IOL keeps providing satisfactory near and distance vision performance 2 years after surgery.
