Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report first experiences with SML – IOL for patients with dry age related macular degeneration (AMD).
Setting:
Departement of Ophthalmology, University Hospital, Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic
Methods:
SML is bifocal add-on IOL with specifically designed central optic and high addition + 10,0 Dsf, intended for monocular implantation in the better seeing eye, without affecting distance vision or visual field. SML is implanted into pseudophakic eye if remaining visual acuity (VA) is better than 0.05 and patient shows reasonable near vision with + 6.0 Dsf lens in front of the eye. We used SML in 4 patients who fulfilled indications. Main parameters were visual acuity without correction after surgery to distance (UDVA) and to the near (UNVA).
Results:
UNVA was better in all patiens after surgery, two of them reached J. 1. week after surgery. We did not observed loss of UDVA. Surgery and postop. course were uneventful.
Conclusions:
Scharioth macular lens is promising implant to increase UNVA in patiens with dry AMD. Our experience is very favourable up till now. SML implantation is feasible for standard cataract surgeon.
