Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy, predictability, and safety of myopic phakic posterior chamber Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) to correct unilateral high myopia in teen aged individuals.

Setting:

Assiut University Hospital,Egypt

Methods:

In a prospective, non comparative, interventional case series, outcomes in 15 high myopic eyes of 15 anisometropic patients with unilateral high myopia, their ages ranged from from 12.00 to 20.00 year (MeanSD 15.372.01),their spherical equivalent ranged from -11.0 to -20.0 diopters (MeanSD -16.252.87) were analyzed 6 months after implantation of myopic ICLs (STAAR Surgical).Preoperatively uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) ranged from 0.01 to 0.05( MeanSD 0.02300.0186).Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ranged from 0.1 to 0.6 (MeanSD 0.46250.23).

Results:

All eyes gained better vision. Uncorrected visual acuity after ICL implantation ranged from 0.1 to 0.6 (MeanSD.35.2) Its improvement was highly significant (P=0.002). BCVA postoperatively ranged from 0.1 to 0.6 (MeanSD .45.23) .No complications were detected. Postoperative spherical equivalent refraction did not exceed -1.0 D of the desired refraction.

Conclusions:

Myopic ICL implantation was a safe, effective, and predictable procedure for the correction of unilateral high myopia in anisometropic teen aged individuals.
