Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the results of collagen cross-linking (CXL) and phakic IOL in keratoconus patients of pashtun race which are a majority ethnic population in Khyber-pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan and southern half of Afghanistan.
Setting:
Private Practice Setting, Peshawar, Pakistan.
Methods:
A retrospective study, in which 4 eyes of 2 keratoconus patients of pashtun race were treated with CXL and followed 9 to 12 months later by toric implantable collamer lenses (TICL, STAAR Surgicals) implantation. The mean spherical refraction was -7.06 ± 6.31 D (range, -0.5 to -14.00 D)), and the mean cylinder was -4.25 ± 0.25 D (range, -4.00 to -4.5 D).
Post implantation follow up ranged from 1 to 2 years.
Results:
: In all 4 eyes, pre-op CDVA improved from 6/9 to UDVA of 6/6. VA remained stable over a follow-up of 1 year in 1st and 2 years in 2nd patient. No complications occurred during the surgical procedures. No eye needed explantation or repositioning of the TICL.
Conclusions:
Correction of spherical and cylindrical refractive errors in keratoconic eyes by TICL implantation 9 to 12 months after CXL gave significantly promising outcomes in our community.
