Clinical outcomes of Toric ICL, Femtolasik and ReLEx SMILE for moderate myopic astigmatism: a matched comparison study

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the clinical results of three modalities – Toric ICL, Femtolasik and ReLEx SMILE for correction of moderate myopic astigmatism in a matched study population.

Setting:

Nethradhama Super speciality eye hospital, Bangalore, India

Methods:

hree study groups ( matched for age and refraction) were created. Group 1- TICL, Group 2- Femtolasik and group 3- ReLEx SMILE. Spherical Equivalent(SE) between -3D to -8D and astigmatism >0.75 D was treated. Patients underwent bilateral procedure , but one eye was randomly selected in study. Number of eyes included in each group were 22, 24 and 30.Mean follow up was at least 6 months.

Results:

Preoperative mean SE was -6.25±1.04 D, -4.8±1.5 D and -5.6±1.8 D in group 1, 2 and 3 respectively .At the end of mean follow up, 100% eyes in all three groups were within ±1 D , while the TICL group and SMILE group showed comparable efficacy (96% eyes in TICL and 95.5 %within ±0.5 D).For astigmatism correction, Femtolasik group showed best outcomes with 98% eyes within ±0.5 D cylindrical correction. Gain of lines of CDVA was maximum in TICL group with 92% eyes gaining more than 2 lines . 2 eyes in TICL group required exchange. Contrast sensitivity scores were highest and postoperative higher order aberrations and dry eye were least in TICL group.

Conclusions:

Toric ICL implantation showed best efficacy , gain in lines and highest patient satisfaction compared to F-LASIK and SMILE in the mid term results of this comparison study.However sizing issues may occur in ICL's with higher resurgery rate
