Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the efficiency and safety of penetrating keratoplasty in the surgical treatment of bullous keratopathy.
Setting:
Central Military Emergency University Hospital “Dr. Carol Davila”, Bucharest, Romania
Methods:
This was a retrospective study. 54 patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty during January 2007- July 2013 were included. The minimal follow-up period was of 12 months, with a mean period of 20 months and a range between 12 and 49 months. The main outcome parameters were postoperative visual acuity, type and frequency of complications.
Results:
The visual acuity at 12 months was better than 1/10 in 29 of the cases (53.7 %) and better than 1/3 in 19 of the cases (35.1 %). The complications included: a mean astigmatism of 3.6 diopters, loss of transparency of the graft in 32 % of the cases at 12 months and 40.5 % of the cases at 24 months, wound dehiscence: 6 cases (11.1 %), corneal ulcer: 4 cases (7.4 %), endophthalmitis: 1 case (1.85 %) and secondary glaucoma: 5 cases (9.2 %).
Conclusions:
Penetrating keratoplasty is a treatment that can improve visual acuity in cases of bullous keratopathy, despite the fact that this surgical intervention has a hard to predict prognostic and relatively numerous complications. FINANCIAL INTEREST:NONE
