Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the long-terme effectiveness of scleroplasty in patients with progressive myopia.
Setting:
The study included two groups of patients with progressive myopia: study group – patients with progressive myopia (1282 eyes) after scleroplasty, control group – patients without scleroplasty (633 eyes). Patients age varied from 5 to 17 years.
Methods:
The follow-up period - from 3 to 8 years.
Results:
Growth of the anterior-posterior ocular globe size per year in the control group was: in a low degree myopia (238 eyes) 0,2 ± 0,011 mm; in moderate degree myopia (343 eyes) 0,2 ± 0,009 mm; in a high degree myopia (52 eyes) - 0,3 ± 0,03 mm. Growth of the anterior-posterior ocular globe size per year in the study group in a low degree (77 eyes) was equal to 0.13 ± 0.02 mm; in an moderate degree (724 eyes) – 0,14 ± 0,01 mm and in a high degree (eye 481) – 0,17 ± 0,01 mm. The difference between the mean values of study and control groups were statistically significant (t> 2,0; p <0,05).
Conclusions:
Scleroplasty prevents distortion of eye globe thus having stabilizing effect in eyes with progressive myopia.
