Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare signs of dry eye in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients versus healthy subjects
Setting:
Necmettin Erbakan University Pathology Department
Methods:
A total of 15 UC patients (UC group, n = 15 eyes) and 15 healthy subjects (control group, 15 eyes) were enrolled in this study. The Schirmer test with no anesthetic, tear break-up time (TBUT) and conjunctival impression cytology were evaluated for both groups.
Results:
UC patients had lower tear volumes than did healthy subjects (p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference between the UC group and the controls with regard to distribution of the conjunctival impression cytology grades (p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant reduction in TBUT and Schirmer measurment in UC group patients compared with control group subjects (p < 0.05).
Conclusions:
The results of this study indicate that UC is associated with severe disturbances in tear function and conjunctival cytology.
