Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this article is to evaluate suture techniques on recurrens and complication ratio in patients who underwent pterygium excision with a conjunctival autograft.

Setting:

Department Of Ophthalmology, Akdeniz University, Antalya, Turkey

Methods:

Patients with primary pterygium were enrolled to study and created two groups. The patients was randomly selected through consecutive surgery. In the first group (n=26), four corners of the graft were sutured into superficial sclera. In the second group (n=28), the graft was sutured into only conjunctival edges. The mean age was 57 ± 11 years. Horizontal sizes of pterygium were 4 ± 0,9 mm.

Results:

Forty-eight of 54 eyes showed no recurrence with in 1 year. In six eyes developed recurrence, three eyes were in the first group and three eyes were in the second. Aslight recurrence (about 1 mm) occured in five case. Recurrence was more observed in cases who has pterygium on the other eye (p<0,001). There was no improvement in ocular movement restriction and symblepharon in any patients. There was no difference in surgical outcome and complication ratio in the groups.

Conclusions:

Conjunctival autograft transplantation with trans-sclaral or trans-conjuctival suture techniques is a safe and effective method for patients with pterygium with a one-year follow-up. Bilateral cases more recipient for recurrence.
