Effect of forward light scattering on visual function in eyes with retrodots

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the effect of forward light scattering (FLS) on visual function in eyes with retrodots (RD).

Setting:

Monzen Eye Study (MES) and Kanazawa Medical University (KMU), Ishikawa, Japan.

Methods:

Of MES participants in 2013-2014 and KMU cataract surgery patients, July 2013 to October 2014, 39 RD eyes of 31 subjects (70.8±9.3yrs.) and 42 transparent lenses of 42 people (57.2±8.7yrs.) as control were enrolled. Cases with ocular abnormalities except refractive error were excluded. RD was graded as 1-3 according to KMU classification method. FLS was measured into log(s) with C-Quant [OCULUS], high-order aberration (HOA) with KR-9000PW [Topcon], backward light scattering intensity (LSI) and lens transparency property (LTP) with anterior eye segment analysis system (EAS-1000 [NIDEK]), retinal contrast with PSF-1000 [Topcon], and contrast visual acuity (VA) with CAT-2000 [NEITZ].

Results:

There was no significant correlation between FLS and age in both in control and RD groups. FLS was higher in RD (1.36±0.3) than controls (1.13±0.2) (p<0.001). FLS increased with progression of RD and with RD ≧2 was significantly higher than in controls (p<0.01). There were no significant correlations between FLS and distance corrected VA, contrast VA, ocular and internal total HOAs. With progression of RD, ocular total HOA and LTP showed no significant increase and those did not differ significantly with control. Retinal contrast decreased in all frequency fields as FLS increased showing a negative correlation especially in low frequency fields (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

FLS significantly increased with progression of RD. As HOA and LSI showed no increase in RD eyes, the main cause of visual function decrease was indicated to be FLS.
