Abstract Details
Purpose:
To achieve high visual acuity and comfort in patients with keratoconus. Rigid Gas-permeable scleral contact lenses have to be customized on individual basis, their design makes them comfortable and easy to use.
Nowadays the field of their application was expanded. They can be used not only in keratoconic patients but also in patients after cornea transplantation or other surgical interference on the eye. They are effective for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism as well, even though the soft lenses are less effective.
Setting:
Eye Clinic,Akhali Mzera,Georgia
Methods:
We have used Scleral Rigid Contact Lenses for 108 eyes of 75 patients. Besides routine ophthalmological examination, corneal topography and ultrasound pachymetry were done. Uncorrected visual acuity was 0,1-0,3; best corrected VA with glasses was 0,3-0,5. The 58 patients were non-tolerant rigid contact lens wearers, the others – had no experience of CL wearing.
Results:
The follow up period was 13 months. The finds showed no episcleral vessel dilatation and the cornea was absolutely avascular. It is important that nearly all patients had high visual acuity and good visual quality.
Conclusions:
Modern rigid oxygen-permeable contact lenses are absolutely safe and they can improve quality of life in keratoconic patients.
