Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the peripapillary RNFL thickness among the normal population in the second decade of life and in the fifth decade of life, to detect variation in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in relation to age.

Setting:

Kasr Alaini Medical School, Cairo, Egypt.

Methods:

Cross sectional observational study included 150 eyes divided into two groups according to the age. First group included 75 eyes of normal subjects in the second decade of life, other group included 75 eyes of normal subjects in the fifth decade of life. All patients were subjected to full ophthalmological assessment, OCT was done to all subjects to evaluate the RNFL thickness.

Results:

150 eyes with 63 males and 58 females with P-value <0.001. The mean of their age (52.832.74), with p-value <0.001. Mean of their refraction (-1.191.85), with p-value 0.011. As regard Superior quadrant RNFL thickness, there was highly statistically significant difference between both groups, with p-value <0.001. As regards the inferior quadrant RNFL thickness, there was no statistically significant difference between both groups, with p-value 0.310.

Conclusions:

There is age related decrease in Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, with significant age related reduction in the superior peripapillary quadrant.
