The impact of short-term elevation of intraocular pressure during LASIK procedure on retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, optical nerve and the macula

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the paper is to investigate if short-term elevation of IOP during LASIK procedure results in peripapillary retinal nerve fibers (RNFL) thinning, structural changes of the optic nerve and changes in macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform thickness (GCL + IPL).

Setting:

The measurements were performed at the Vision and Eye Center Maja in Niš, Serbia.

Methods:

We followed 56 eyes in 37 myopic patients (22 male and 15 female patients, aged 30+/-5.08 years). The patients did not have any other ocular diseases. Myopia values were in the range from -3.5 D to -7.0 D (mean values -4.5 +/- 1.1 D). Measurements were performed immediately before the intervention and 1, 3 and 6 months after LASIK intervention in the Eye Vision Center Maja in Niš by Cirrus SD-OCT.

Results:

Mean value of RNFL thickness before the intervention was 98.4 +/-11.2. Changes in mean RNFL thickness were not statistically significant. Changes in RNFL thickness in the superior, inferior, temporal and nasal quadrants before and 1, 3 and 6 months after the intervention were also not statistically significant. Statistically significant structural changes of the optic nerve were also not registered. The mean value of GCL + IPL thickness was 79.03 +/-2.05. Statistical significance in alteration of the mean and minimal GCL + IPL thickness was not registered, nor the thickness of the GCL+IPL complex in sectors.

Conclusions:

RNFL and the GCL+IPL complex thickness remain unchanged following LASIK intervention. Lasik also did not affect the structure of the optic nerve.
