Purpose:
To compare the visual and refractive outcomes of laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) using Allegretto® (WaveLight Laser Technologie AG) versus Esiris® (Schwind Eye Tech Solutions, Kleinostheim) excimer lasers to correct myopia.
Setting:
Clinica Novovision, Madrid, Spain. Clinica Rementeria, Madrid, Spain; Universidad de Alcala, Alcala de Henares, Madrid, Spain.
Methods:
This retrospective study included 274 eyes of consecutive patients younger than 40 years. We compared 137 eyes treated with LASEK using Allegretto excimer laser (A) versus 137 refraction-matched eyes treated with LASEK using Esiris excimer laser (E). All LASEK procedures were performed by the same surgeon (MAT), using intraoperative MMC. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) and refractive outcomes were evaluated 1 day, 1 week, and 1 and 3 months postoperatively.
Results:
No significant differences were found in the mean UDVA at one day, one week and one month postoperatively between groups as well as three months BCDVA (P=0.2) and safety index 1.006±0.12 versus 1.07±0.95 (P=0.8) in A vs E groups, respectively. Statistically significant different outcomes were found three months post-op in terms of UDVA (-0.03±0.10 vs 0.009±0.11) (P=0.004), residual sphere (-0.01±0.24 vs 0.29±0.65) (P=0.0001), residual cylinder (-0.06±0.32 vs -0.35±0.53) (P=0.0001) and efficacy index (0.99±0.16 vs 0.90±0.18) (P=0.0002), respectively. 96.7% vs 69.6% (P=0.0001) of eyes were within ±0.5D, and 99.1% vs 87.4% (P=0.0002) were within ±1D, in A versus E groups, respectively.
Conclusions:
Both Allegretto and Esiris excimer lasers were found to be safe, effective and predictable when performing a LASEK procedure to correct myopia. Slightly better visual and refractive outcomes were observed in the Allegretto-treated eyes in a 3-month follow-up.
