Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the evolution of sub-Bowman laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (SBK-LASIK) flap and epithelium thickness during the first month postoperative by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). To compare intraoperative flap thickness (FT) measurement by ultrasound pachymetry (US) with immediate postoperative by AS-OCT

Setting:

International Center of Advanced Ophthalmology, Madrid, Spain. University of Extremadura. Departament of ophthalmology.

Methods:

We study 116 eyes of 60 patients that underwent SBK-LASIK using Moria one-use plus system to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Patients with contraindications for LASIK surgery, corneal diseases, glaucoma or any intra or postoperative complications were excluded. FT was calculated intraoperatively by subtracting residual stromal thickness from corneal thickness (CT) measured by US. FT and central epithelium thickness (ET) were measured postoperatively at 1 hour, 24 hours, 1 week and 1 month manually by AS-OCT. Evolution of FT and ET was studied and measurements were compared with T-Student test.

Results:

Mean age of the 38 women and 22 men studied was 35,6+-9,1 years. Preoperative CT and ET were 549,59+-29,88 microns and 51,97+-3,8 microns respectively measured by AS-OCT. Intraoperative FT was 98,6+-13,9 microns by US. Postoperative AS-OCT FT and ET were, respectively, 110,7+-12,28 microns and 54,16+-3,68 microns at 1 hour, 103,15+-12,54 and 53,01+-3,66 at 24 hours, 103,4+-12,78 and 52,49+-3,7 at 1 week and 109,1+-44,2 and 54,64+-3,8 at 1 months. There was a statistically significant increase from 1 week to 1 month of 5,7 microns for FT and 2,15 microns for ET.

Conclusions:

Intraoperative FT measurement with US were thinner than immediate postoperative AS-OCT (manually). An increase of FT and ET was observed through the first month postoperative.
