Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess whether fluorescein filter imaging of corneal fluorescein staining due to limbal stem cell failure (LSCF) better documents the corneal fluorescein staining than traditional methods of imaging .
Setting:
Moorfields Eye department at Bedford Hospital
Methods:
Fluorescein filters using a fundus fluorescein camera were used to image fluorescein stained corneas due to limbal stem cell failure. The images were then magnified to better examine areas of interest.
Results:
Corneal staining digitally imaged with fluorescein filters showed the classic ‘whorled’ corneal epithelial stain of limbal stem cell failure in more detail than just examination and photography with blue light. There appears to be more resolution with this technique at higher magnification.
Images demonstrating the above will be shown.
Conclusions:
Fluorescein filter digital imaging appears to be a accurate method to image and document corneal staining in limbal stem cell failure. This may allow better quantification of corneal staining to aid in management of this condition.
