Evaluation of corneal changes after myopic LASIK using Pentacam

Abstract Details
Purpose:
Using the pentacam to evaluate the corneal changes that occur after LASIK.
Setting:
it is a prospective study done in Roaa eye center, in Elminya, Egypt
Methods:
Our study included sixty eyes of 32 patients. All patients treated for myopia and myopic astigmatism with LASIK. They were examined preoperatively and three months postoperatively using pentacam to asses corneal changes as curvature, elevation, and asphericity of the cornea.
Results:
Statistically significant decrease of the mean keratometric power of anterior corneal surface (Km) (p= 0.001) was detected 3 months postoperatively. No significant change in posterior Km (p = 0.836). Asphericity of the anterior and posterior surfaces increased significantly post LASIK (P=0.001). Significant forward bulge of the anterior surface at 4mm and 7mm zones was detected three months post LASIK ( p= 0.001), non significant increase of the posterior elevation at 4mm and 7 mm zones (p= 0.637& 0.26). Indirect correlation between pachymetry and anterior elevation at 4mm & 7mm (r=-0.27, p-0.13 & r=-0.37, p-0.04 respectively) , and a direct correlation between pachymetry and anterior and posterior Km (r=0.7 ,p=0.001 & r=0.4 ,p=0.028).
Conclusions:
LASIK causes significant changes of the anterior corneal surface, and it affects the posterior surface but this effect is subtle and insignificant.
