Evaluation of tomographic parameters as measured by Scheimpflug corneal imaging with severity of keratoconus

Purpose:
To evaluate the correlation of tomographic parametrs of the rotating Scheimpflug camera with severity of keratoconus
Setting:
National Ophthalmology Center named after acad. Z.Aliyeva, Azerbaijan.
Methods:
In this prospective study were analyzed 104 keratoconus eyes of 52 young man at the age 18-20. A rotating Scheimpflug imaging system, the Oculyzer II was used to evaluate all eyes for following tomographic parameters: central and thinnest pachymetry; front and back corneal elevation at the thinnest corneal point; pachymetric progression indices (minimum, average, and maximum); and Ambrosio’s average and maximum relational thickness indices.All Data were correlated with maximum keratometry , and severity of keratoconus as assessed by Amsler-Krumiech classification of keratoconus
Results:
35 eyes had mild ( k< 47 diopters ), 42 eyes had moderate (K=47- 52 diopters) keratoconus, 27 had severe (K=52- 60 diopters) keratoconus. There was a significant positive correlation between keratoconus severity and corneal elevations ,also between keratoconus severity and all Pachymetry Progression Index (PPI). All PPI and ART parameter values were significantly different between groups and were highly correlated (P = .000 and r > .860 for all) with maximum keratometry (K max), Mean keratometry (K m) and all corneal elevations . A significant negative correlation was found between thinnest pachymetry , and all corneal elevations (P = .000 and r < -.821 for all).
Conclusions:
Evaluation of tomographyc parameters obtained from Scheimpflug corneal imaging is useful for grading severity of keratoconus
