Abstract Details
Purpose:
To quantify nuclear lens density by means of Scheimpflug image analysis and compare the values obtained against LOCS III scores.
Setting:
Karolinska Institutet, Sweden
Methods:
The nuclear opacity (NO) was graded according to the LOCS III scale on 89 eyes with nuclear cataract by an experienced observer. Scheimpflug images of the lens were obtained with the Sirius (Costruzione Strumenti Oftalmici, Firenze, Italy) Scheimpflug imaging system. A custom made MATLAB program and a region of interest was used to automatically analyse the pixel intensity value of the nucleus.
Results:
There was a positive and significant correlation between LOCS III grading and Sirius Scheimpflug mean average (r=0.731; P<0.01) and mean maximum (r=0.738; P<0.01) NO.
Conclusions:
Sirius Scheimpflug showed a good and significant correlation with LOCS III for lens density measurements. The four analysed slices of the nucleus had similar average and maximum NO. Scheimpflug imaging might be helpful for quantifying nuclear cataract.
