Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the results of biodegradable Glautex drainage application in penetrating glaucoma operations.

Setting:

Ufa Eye Research Institute

Methods:

The study included 52 patients (52 eyes) with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), aged from 35 to 79 years (the average age 59.7) who underwent fistulizing surgery - trabeculectomy with Glautex drainage implant (Russia, Hi-BiTech). In addition to conventional ophthalmic examination before and after surgery, some patients after 1,3,6 and 12 months after the operation had optical coherence tomography of the anterior segment of the eye (by Visante OCT, Alcon) to monitor the biodegradation of the implant and the state of the filtering bleb. The observation period was from 6 to 12 months.

Results:

In both groups, after glaucoma surgery performed with Glautex drainage implant the postoperative period was areactive. The drainage implant was visualized during biomicroscopy in a rectangular form. The filtering blebs after surgery were diffuse, flat. No cases of blebitis have been noted. It should be marked development of hyphema in 7.7% of cases, cilio-choroidal detachment in 3.8% of cases and shallow anterior chamber syndrome in 1.9% of cases among early postoperative complications. According to biomicroscopy and OCT biodestruction of Glautex implant took 3.5-5.5 months. Antihypertensive results: treatment was successful in 90.4% of cases (including 14.5% with additional antihypertensive therapy with one drug). Visual acuity maintained or improved in 94.2% of cases. The main reason for decrement in visual acuity was progression of cataracts.

Conclusions:

Glaucoma surgery using biodegradable Glautex drainage implant provide quite apparent hypotensive effect in 90.4% of cases in the long-term period, playing an important role in preventing adhesions around the conjunctiva and sclera.
