Incidence of glaucoma in patients with obstructive sleep apnea at King Abdul Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah KSA

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Objective: To study the incidence of glaucoma in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSA) and correlate glaucoma with the severity of OSA based on apnea hypopnea index (AHI).

Setting:

King Abdul Aziz University Hospital Jeddah KSA

Methods:

48 out of 330 patients diagnosed with OSA in the sleep research centre of King Abdul Aziz University Hospital. Inclusion criteria: Established diagnosis of OSA . 100 patients were included. Only 48 patients agreed to participate Exclusion criteria: steroid users, patients already diagnosed with glaucoma, any other ocular disease. First visit screening: Medical and ocular history, best corrected visual acuity, intra ocular pressure, fundus examination, BMI, AHI Second visit investigations for glaucoma suspects: pachymetry, Humphrey visual fields, GDX-VCC, OCT.

Results:

5/48 confirmed to have glaucoma in at least one eye with estimated prevalence of ( 10.4%) . Patients age, gender, sex ,BMI, DM, HTN, and AHI showed no statistically significant relation to the risk of developing glaucoma with P-value >0.05. Mean Cup:disc ratio of both eyes were significant with estimated p-value (<0.001). Mean IOP of left eye of glaucoma patients was significant with P-value 0.025, while the in the right eye was insignificant to the risk of glaucoma.

Conclusions:

The prevalence of Glaucoma is common among the OSA patients and it's similar to that reported in other communities. However, it appears there is no significant association between glaucoma and AHI. Further studies, with case control with larger sample are needed in order to confirm the link between glaucoma and OSA.
