Purpose:
To investigate the change in corneal astigmatism after non penetratring deep sclerectomy (NPDE)
Setting:
Private Ophthalmology Hospital, Spain
Methods:
Patients who underwent a primary NPDE during 2013 were enrolled in this prospective study. We measured the visual acuity, automated refractometry, oculus pentacam tomography and the intraocular pressure (IOP) preoperatively and postoperatively at 1, 3, and 6 months. We analyzed shifts in astigmatism and the correlation with the visual acuity and IOP.
Results:
A total of 43 eyes were included. The mean snellen visual acuity was 0.74 preoperatively, 0.70 after 3 months and 0.69 after 6 months (p>0.05). The mean IOP decreased from 17.7 mmHg preoperatively to 13.5 after 6 months (P<0.001 in both cases). At one month after surgery the mean shif of astigmatism was 0.46 (p>0.05), after 3 months was 0.25 (p>0.05) and 0.06 at the 6 month (p>0.05), most with the rule. There was a negative correlation between the change of IOP and the astigmatism shift. The mean axis of the positive cylinder changed from 174 to 146 degrees after 3 months (P>0.05).
Conclusions:
NPDE don´t induced a statistically significant shift in astigmatism in any of the postoperatively visits. That means that most of the patients will continue with their preoperatively glasses.
