Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and visual field tests in normal, glaucoma suspect, early and advanced glaucoma cases.

Setting:

Eskisehir State Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Eskisehir, TURKEY Eskisehir Osmangazi University, Department of Ophthalmology, Meselik, Eskisehir, TURKEY

Methods:

160 eyes of 80 patients were included. There were 18 healthy, 17 glaucoma suspect, 30 early glaucoma, 15 advanced glaucoma cases. After complete ophthalmic examination, Humphrey visual field analysis and mfERG were performed. These exams were done 3 times at 6 months intervals. Visual fields global indices and mfERG implicit time and amplitudes were evaluated and analyzed by ring system (central 5o, 5-10o, 10-15 o and >15o ). One-way Anova and Pearson correlation test was used for statistical analysis.

Results:

The mean age of healthy controls, glaucoma suspect, early glaucoma, and advanced glaucoma cases were 53.2, 55.0, 53.7, and 60.7, respectively (p=0.1). mfERG implicit time were delayed and amplitudes were decreased parallel to glaucomatous damage in visual field parameters (p≤0.001). There was no significant difference in mfERG parameters and visual field global indices between normal and the patients with glaucoma suspect. When we analyzed mfERG and visual fıeld tests via ring analysis, peripheral area showed the best topographıc compliance between two tests.

Conclusions:

mfERG and visual field tests showed good correlatıon in all groups. However, both tests were unable to discriminate the glaucoma suspects from normal subjects
