Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the changes in tear film and corneal sensitivity after femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and microincisional phacoemulsification.
Setting:
This is prospective, clinical case-control study.
Methods:
Fifty-three eyes of fifty-three patients with age-related cataract were divided into two groups according to the surgical approach. Schirmer test without anesthesia, non-invasive tear break time(NIBUT),corneal sensitivity and subjective score for dryness were compared among two groups.
Results:
1 daYy7 days and 1 month postoperatively, both the mean NIBUT and Schirmer test of the microincisional group reduced greatly than the femtosecond laser group. The values recovered to preoperative levels at 3 months postoperatively.
At 1 day 、7 days、1 month and 3 months post-operatively, the mean subjective scores for dryness of the microincisional group were higher than the femtosecond laser group; At 1 day、7 days、1 month postoperatively, the upper corneal sensitivity of the microincisional group was shorter than the femtosecond laser group,and all recovered to the preoperative levels at 3 months postoperatively.There was no statistically significant difference among the two groups at any time point for central corneal sensitivity.
Conclusions:
Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery bring less disturbance to ocular surface,brighter symptoms of dry eye,faster recovery of corneal sensitivity and the patients feel more comfortable.
