Abstract Details

Purpose:

Describe our experience in enhancing the femtosecond cataract surgery when the fracture of the nucleus is combined with ultrachopper preventing capsular blockage and posterior capsular rupture during hydrodissection.

Setting:

Clínica Oftalmológica del Caribe, Barranquilla, Colombia, South America.

Methods:

We present an approach in which after the femtosecond laser exposure, we perform the antiblockage technique that consists in making a groove with the ultrachopper and divide the nucleus prior to hydrodissection facilitating the gas release and preventing the capsular blockage. Also the ultrachopper facilitates the rupture of the posterior plaque enhancing the fracture as well.

Results:

In our experience, the Femtosecond ultrachopper assited surgery has enhanced the nucleus fracture and decreased the blockage syndrome since the ultrachopper enables us to use the antiblockage technique thus facilitating gas release and preventing posterior capsular rupture during hydrodissection. Also the ultrasonic energy is low as well as the fluids and the time of surgery.

Conclusions:

In our experience we can say that the ultrachopper adds safety to the femtosecond laser surgery and its easy to use. The use of the antiblockage technique with the ultrachopper facilitates gas release and prevents capsular blockage.
