Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study efficiency of implantation of intrastromal corneal segments at a keratoconus using femtosecond laser VisuMAX

Setting:

The Khabarovsk branch of the State Institution Eye Microsurgery” Complex named after S. N. Fedorov

Methods:

Researches were carried out in 5 patients (5 eyes) with keratoconus ΙΙ stage (M. Amsler, 1961). Spheroequivalent ranged from +0.75 to -2,5 dptr (average -1.58 dptr), the cylindrical component of 0 to 5.5 dptr (average 3.62 dptr). Ophthalmometry – 49-59 dptr (average - 55.6), keratopachymetry (Pentakam) – 420-523 (average – 479.3) micron. In 3 eyes 1 segment length of 160° was implanted, in 1 eye – 2 segments of 90° and 1 eye – one segment of length 359°.

Results:

Corneal tunnel formation were performed using a femtosecond laser VisuMax (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany), with a wavelength of 1043 nm and pulse duration 220-580 at depth of 80% of the thickness of the cornea. On the first day after surgery spheroequivalent varied from 0 to -0.75 (on average -0.25) dptr, cylindrical component – from 0 to -2.5 (average -1.42) dptr, ophthalmometry – from 48 to 52 (average - 49.7) dptr. 3 months after surgery these indicators have not changed.

Conclusions:

Implantation of intrastromal corneal segments for keratoconus with the formation of corneal tunnel using VisuMAX femtosecond laser is an effective method of correction of refractive disorders at keratoconus.
