Late onset of persistent, deep stromal haze after corneal cross-linking in a patient with keratoconus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present a case of bilateral late, deep stromal haze in patient with keratoconus who underwent corneal cross-linking.

Setting:

Private cornea clinic

Methods:

A 30-year-old male underwent uneventful corneal collagen cross-linking treatment for progressive keratoconus according to the Dresden protocol. The postoperative course up to 9 months postoperatively was uncomplicated. At 11-month postoperatively he complained of recent decreased visual acuity and increased photophobia in both eyes, more significant in the right eye. On examination significant subepithelial and stromal haze was observed on both eyes, more severe on the right, which was not seen on previous examinations. Topical steroid treatment was renewed.

Results:

Very slow and partial improvement of the haze in both eyes along with partial improvement in visual acuity was observed up to the last follow up examination, 5 months after renewing the topical steroids.

Conclusions:

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented case developing late onset persistent haze after corneal cross-linking.
