Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) in the management of progressive keratoconus.
Setting:
Baskent University Faculty of Medicine, Ophthalmology Department
Methods:
The study enrolled 28 eyes of 24 patients. The mean age was 22.0 years ±5.84 (SD). The accelerated CXL treatments were performed using a 30-minute riboflavin 0.1% soak and 5-minute ultraviolet-A (UVA) irradiance at a level of 18 mW/cm2. Total radiant exposure was 5.4 J/cm2.
Results:
The mean uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity showed a statistically significant improvement, from 0.19±0.18 and 0.40±0.23 preoperatively to 0.21 ±0.20 and 0.56± 0.20 at 6 months postoperatively respectively (P=0.002 and P=0.001) . The mean maximum keratometry readings changed significantly, from 52.63±3.25 diopters (D) preoperatively to 50.63±3.52 D at 6 months (P=0.001) The mean minimum keratometry readings also changed significantly, from 47.28±2.94 D to 46.10±2.57 D at 6 months (P=0.001)
Conclusions:
We found accelerated CXL has the potential to efficiently treat and stabilize keratoconus.
