Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the effects of Laser assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK)-Xtra procedures on corneal deformation parameters.

Setting:

Eyereum Eye Clinic, Seoul, South Korea. Department of Ophthalmology, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea.

Methods:

In this prospective study, 115 eyes of 60 patients scheduled for LASEK-Xtra procedure were enrolled. Changes in the corneal deformation parameters, including deformation amplitude, applanation length (AL1 and AL2), corneal velocity (CV1 and CV2), peak distance, central corneal thickness (CCT), radius and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured preoperatively, 2 weeks, 1 month, and 3 months after procedure using Corvis Scheimpflug Technology (Corvis ST, OCULUS, Wetzlar, Germany). In subgroup analysis, we compared two riboflavin solutions, Vibex Xtra (65 eyes; Avedro, Inc., Waltham, MA, USA) and Vibex Rapid (50 eyes; Avedro, Inc.). Repeated measures ANOVA with bonferroni-adjusted post hoc comparisons was performed.

Results:

Compared with baseline, uncorrected distance visual acuity showed significant improvement at each time point. A significant difference was detected among the four time points for AL2 (P=0.004), CV2 (P<0.001), CCT (P<0.001), radius (P<0.001), and IOP (P<0.001). Bonferroni-adjusted post hoc comparisons indicated that there was a significant decrease in AL2, CV2, CCT, radius, and IOP following LASEK-Xtra procedures. However, there was no significant change in deformation amplitude after LASEK Xtra. There was a sustained plateau after 2 weeks. In subgroup analysis, there was no significant difference between two riboflavin solutions in the measurement of deformation parameters.

Conclusions:

There is a significant change in corneal deformation parameters following LASEK-Xtra procedure. Additionally, no difference was noted between the two riboflavin solutions regarding the parameters.
