Association of corneal biomechanical parameters with corneal topography and refractive status in normal eyes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the association of corneal biomechanical properties with topographic parameters and refractive status in normal eyes.

Setting:

Athens Ophthalmological Center

Methods:

70 myopic and 32 hyperopic normal eyes of 51 healthy individuals were included in the study and were subdivided to different age groups (19-29 years and 30-40 years). Keratometric values were measured using Oculus Pentacam and corneal biomechanical parameters were measured using Ocular Response Analyzer. A further division of each group was performed according to the severity of myopia (spherical equivalent -1.00 D to -6.00 D and -6.00 D to -12.00 D) and the keratometric values (K2 over and under 45D). A comparison of Corneal Hysteresis (CH) and Corneal resistance factor (CRF) among the different subgroups was performed.

Results:

At the 19-29 years age group the mean CH value was 9.4 ± 1.25 SD and 13.2 ± 1.70 SD in myopic and hyperopic eyes respectively and this difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). At the same age group the mean CRF value was 8.9 ± 0.96 SD and 12.2 ± 2.45 SD and the difference was considered statistically significant (P < 0.01), although the great difference between the SD of the two mean CRF values reduces the reliability of the comparison. No further significant difference was found among the different subgroups.

Conclusions:

The two studied biomechanical parameters of the cornea (CH and CRF) were found more reduced in myopic than in hyperopic eyes in young adults (19-29 years), while this association does not seem to exist in older individuals. No significant association was documented in our study between biomechanical parameters and corneal topographic measurements.
