Correlation between corneal hysteresis and visual field index in open-angle glaucoma patients

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To investigate the relationships between CH (Corneal Hysteresis), CCT (Central Corneal Thickness) and VFI (Visual Field Index) in glaucomatous and non glaucomatous human eyes.
Setting:
Clinical Ophthalmology Emergency Hospital Bucharest
Methods:
This was a retrospective randomized study of 95 eyes (53 glaucomatous and 42 non glaucomatous). We determined CH and CRF using Reichert Ocular Response Analyzer, CCT using ultrasonic pachymetry, IOP (intraocular pressure) using Goldman tonometer, MD (Mean Deviation), PSD (Pattern Standard Deviation) and VFI using Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer. Descriptive analysis, linear regression and Pearson correlation test were used for statistical analysis.
Results:
Linear regression analysis revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between CH and VFI (r=0,27 p lower then 0,004 in non glaucomatous eyes) and a negative one with IOP (r=-0,44 p lower then 0,0001 in glaucomatous eyes and r=-0,54 p lower then 0,001 in non glaucomatous eyes). No statistically significant correlation was found between CH and CCT (r=0,17 p lower then 0,31 in glaucomatous eyes and r=0,23 p lower then 0,22 in non glaucomatous eyes).
Conclusions:
Lower CH was associated with lower VFI and higher IOP both in glaucomatous and non glaucomatous eyes. We concluded that CH is an important parameter for determining the diagnosis and the evolution of glaucoma progression.
