Corneal biomechanical features in aspirin using individuals

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze corneal biomechanical characteristics in individuals who take aspirin using the Ocular Response Analyzer.

Setting:

This retrospective case-control study was performed in Acibadem University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology, Turkey.

Methods:

This study included 80 eyes of 40 individuals who do not take aspirin and 80 eyes of 40 individuals currently using aspirin. CH, CRF, IOPg, IOPcc were obtained from all participants. Independent samples t-test was used to compare the values among aspirin-users vs. non-users in overall subjects and in diabetic patients subgroup. Pearson correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between measured variables in aspirin users and non-users.

Results:

There was a statistically significant difference in the mean age of the participants in aspirin-using and non-using groups, the values which were 59.08 ± 11.83 y and 39.82 ± 12.97 y, respectively (p=0.001). Mean CH value was lower in ASA (+) group (p=0.013). Mean IOPg and mean IOPcc values were also higher in ASA (+) group (p=0.027 for IOPg, p=0.002 for IOPcc). Mean CRF value was also lower in ASA (+) group but the difference was not found to be statistically significant (p=0.70). There was a significantly positive correlation between CH and CRF (r=0.767, p=0.001), CRF and IOPg (r=0.680, p=0.001) and significantly negative correlation between CH and IOPcc (r=-0.415, p=0.001).

Conclusions:

Aspirin can influence the corneal biomechanical properties. Aging and diabetes were associated with increased AGEs accumulation in the cornea, which can be reversed by using aspirin because of its anti-glycation properties. Aspirin should be taken into account when interpreting the results of corneal biomechanical characteristics.
