Penetrating keratoplasty in monocular patients

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate results of penetrating keratoplasty in monocular patients and to define complications developed during and after surgery and related risk factors.

Setting:

Kartal Training and Research Hospital

Methods:

Records of 102 monocular patients, who had penetrating keratoplasty surgery (PK) at Dr Lütfi Kırdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital between 2000-2012 were retrospectively reviewed and included in this study. Records were evaluated with respect to demographic and clinical data’s, surgical characteristics, complications that occurred during and after the surgery and related risk factors

Results:

There were 102 (62 males and 40 females) monocular patients with the mean age of 61.3±19.3 years who had penetrating keratoplasty in our clinic. Reason to be monocular was most commonly related with phthisis bulbi (43.1%). The most common indications for PK at subjected eye were aphakic/pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (28.4%). In 42.2 % of cases PK were combined with other surgical procedures. The mean follow up time was 25.13±25.4 months. Visual acuity was increased in 63.7% cases (P<0.01), remained same in 31.3% cases and decreased in 5 % cases. Graft was remained clear in 67.4 % of eyes during follow up. Eight eyes had traumatic wound dehiscence and 50% of these eyes developed graft rejection/insufficiency.

Conclusions:

PK in monocular patients seems satisfactory in respect to anatomical and functional results.
