The comparison of intrastromal corneal ring segment implantation in different maximum K value and corneal thickness

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy of intrastromal ring segment (Intacs, Addition Technology, Inc.) implantation and analyze outcomes in different Maximum K value(K max) and corneal thickness.
Setting:
SU yonsei eye clinic, Seoul, Korea
Methods:
In this retrospective study, 115 keratoconic eyes of 99 patients who had SK Intacs segment implantation were reviewed. Postoperative examinations were at 1 and 6 months. Patients were grouped arbitrary according to Maximum K value(group A: K max>60D, group B: K max<60D) and corneal thickness (group C: thickness>400㎛, group D thickness<400㎛). Evaluation was included uncorrected visual acuity(UCVA), best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) manifest refraction, slit lamp examination, corneal topography, central corneal thickness(CCT) and IOP
Results:
The study evaluated 115 eyes of 99 patients with a mean age of 31.2 years (range 18 to 55 years). The mean UCVA was significantly better 6 months postoperatively than preoperatively (0.14 versus 0.33) (P<0.01), as was the mean BCVA (0.42 versus 0.60) (P<0.01). Other pre- and 6-months postoperative clinical results were: mean SimK 49.36 (D) and 45.37 (P<0.01), respectively; mean K max value, 60.01 D and 55.74 D, respectively (P<0.01); In comparison between patient groups, Group A shows better efficacy than group B(P<0.01) and group D shows better efficacy than group C (P<0.01)
Conclusions:
Implantation of ICRS for advanced keratoconus is safe and effective, leading to significant improvement in UCVA, BCVA, Sim K, and K max. Also ICRS is more effective in high maximum K group and thin cornea group
