Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the influence to visual acuity by corneal host-donor interface opacity after Descemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty(DSAEK).
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology,Dokkyo Medical University,Tochigi,Japan
Methods:
Subjects were 16 eyes in 14 cases who underwent DSAEK and whose best spectacle-corrected visual acuity was ≤0.4 or ≥0.7. Eight eyes were treated by microkeratome-assisted DSAEK and 8 eyes were treated by femtosecond laser-assisted DSAEK. After surgery, the host corneal stroma was clear without the presence of edema, but opacity was observed in the interface with the donor cornea in all cases. The corneal opacity, as represented by brightness on a 256-tone grayscale was measured using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (SS-1000 CASIA TOMEY). The relationship between interface opacity and visual acuity was examined.
Results:
Mean opacity was 131.6±12.9 in the group with corrected visual acuity ≤0.4 and 116.9±11.3 in the group with corrected visual acuity ≥0.7, a statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.03).
Conclusions:
Host-donor interface opacity is a factor influencing visual prognosis after DSAEK.
